As
aging shopping malls are burdened with high vacancy rates and the loss
of anchor tenants, developers are partnering with cities nationwide to
transform traditional mall sites into vibrant, mixed-use destinations
that incorporate higher density housing. What can the Sacramento region
learn from other cities about this trend? Can aging malls become
thriving and desirable residential communities? What are some of the
tools and methods that developers and cities are using to facilitate
housing production in traditional mall sites, “miracle miles” and other
retail corridors?
We’ll hear from the Director of Special Projects and the development team of the Collin Creek Mall
project in Plano, Texas. Once complete, Collin Creek Mall will be
transformed into a $1 billion mixed-use destination with up to 3,100 new
residential units and a series of new office, restaurant and hotel
buildings, while preserving functional elements of the former mall site.
We’re also excited to have two architects from DLR Group to share some
of their best practices from a design perspective to incorporate higher
density housing in malls, retail corridors and urban infill sites, such
as the Freedom West project in San Francisco.
