NEWS & UPDATES

CHAIR’S MESSAGE
This message begins with an acknowledgment of the amazing leadership of our Immediate Past Chair, Jose Bodipo-Memba. Jose exhibited the highest level of professionalism, energy, determination, and positivity over the last two years. He refused to let ULI go dormant during COVID, and ended his tenure with a burst of on-line, hybrid, and in-person programming for the benefit of our members. We have been extremely lucky to have Jose’s commitment, and, on behalf of this District Council, we express our deepest gratitude for his leadership.
I am honored and excited to be the Chair of ULI Sacramento for the next two years. For those of you who don’t know me, I am a Bay Area native and joined ULI 20 years ago (as a graduate student in Chicago); shortly after relocating to Sacramento, I helped start ULI Sacramento’s Young Leaders Group in the early 2000’s. From 2009 to 2021, I founded and operated New Economics & Advisory, an economics consulting firm active in Northern California and Northern Nevada. Following significant soul searching a few years back, I decided to wind down New Economics this year to pursue other personal and professional interests. Those interests include ULI and a variety of other community efforts, as well as involvement in Taylor Builders, a development company founded and led by my spouse. I am also a mother to two daughters, currently ages 10 and 11.

Another Chance to Get Involved: Two New ULI Sacramento Initiatives
ULI Sacramento has created two new committees to organize programs and efforts for our local members. The Climate Resilience & Innovation initiative, chaired by Dan Krekelberg of Ascent Environmental, will organize programs highlighting local real estate projects with innovative design, financing, and planning strategies aimed at achieving greenhouse gas reductions in new and existing buildings and transportation projects. Also, a new Building Healthy & Equitable Spaces committee will continue the work started by our Health & Equity Taskforce. Led by Jose Bodipo Memba (Immediate Past Chair and Full Member) of SMUD and Alvin Yee (Associate Member) of Cunningham Engineering, this committee will share best practices in city and community building around the intersection of health and social equity in real estate and development projects. Reach out to Dan or Alvin, respectively, if you are interested in joining one of these committees.

ULI and AIA Join Forces to Design Housing Concepts for the Homeless
John Hodgson (Past Chair and Full Member) and Bob Chase (Associate Member) coordinated an effort to prepare three designs for temporary supportive housing for Sacramento’s homeless. Led by ULI Sacramento and AIA, three local architect teams and social service providers conceptualized different ways to provide Sacramento’s homeless residents with not just shelter but also the support, services and care needed to realize their independence and improve their quality of life. This effort has been embraced by Sacramento Mayor Steinberg and is part of his proposed housing master plan to help address this issue. John and Bob will lead an overview of this effort during an upcoming ULI Think Tank, including introductory remarks by Mayor Steinberg, on Monday, August 16. Register here and/or read the Executive Summary here.

YLG Tour Recap
ULI Sacramento’s YLG Beer and Buildings tour feature has returned after its pandemic hiatus, and to a great turnout no less! Despite the 106° heat, the tour and tasting at Ruhstaller Brewing’s new Farm & Yard in Dixon was a hit. Toffee Kittisathanon of Mogavero Architects and J-E Paino of Ruhstaller hosted a perfect evening of unique architecture and craft brewing insight for YLG members during the private tour of the yard, tasting room, and hop-drying facilities on June 16. Thank you to everyone who made the return of Beer and Buildings a success!
