Chair’s Note
These last two years have been unbelievably challenging for us as humans, as parents and/or grandparents, as working professionals, as friends. Over the years, I have made many true friends in ULI, and I am grateful for these relationships. As we come out of this pandemic, though, we find ourselves living and working in a Region, within a state and a world, full of challenges that, in many ways, have gotten worse:
- Fires are destroying all sorts of communities and hindering tourism and our own enjoyment of the great outdoors all over California;
- Our housing shortage is continuing to get worse;
- Social and economic inequities, among other factors, are causing homelessness to increase; and,
- As a local and global society, we are becoming increasingly fractured and we struggle to listen and converse with each other with respect.
As someone who has been actively involved in both ULI and the land use industry for the last 20 years, I find myself thinking more and more about what our role, as land use professionals, is and could be in helping to solve these challenges, all of which are affecting our communities and, specifically, our built environment.
I think the answer is that we can do a lot, and some of our own members are showing the way. This week at Vision Honors we are honoring projects and people who have displayed outstanding leadership over the last two years. In addition, our ULI Sacramento district is actively engaging in seven initiatives tackling race and gender inequalities, expanding our pipeline of young professionals, elevating housing development solutions, highlighting climate resilience practices, and promoting the creation of healthy places for everyone.
And, finally, we have members who continue to go above and beyond in their efforts to transform our local communities. John Hodgson (Full Member and Past Chair) and Bob Chase (ULI Member) have stepped up over the last several months to facilitate the creation of feasible design options for temporary homeless housing projects with services right here in Sacramento Thanks to their dogged efforts, ULI continues to be a resource leader on this issue.
Secondly, our immediate past Chair and Full Member, Jose Bodipo Memba, has led us into disadvantaged communities, like Meadowview, to help residents find their voice and speak up for their planning and community needs. The work performed by the original Meadowview task force created momentum that has converted into one of our most impactful, ongoing initiatives.
These and other ULI Sacramento members are showing leadership, innovation, and boldness. Let´s keep up the great work, Sacramento, and see how much of a difference we can continue to make!
