Member Profile: Allen Folks
Allen Folks, past Chair of ULI Sacramento, has participated in 17 ULI Advisory Services Panels (ASPs) to assist in solving downtown and neighborhood redevelopment issues. Mr. Folks previously participated in ASPs throughout the US (including NC, NY, NJ, CA, CA, AZ, VA, WA, and TX), as well as in the Philippines and China. Allen’s most recent Panel participation was in early 2020 in Port Aransas, Texas, a community east of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico.

After Hurricane Harvey destroyed portions of this area in 2017, causing widespread flooding and destruction, a volunteer Panel of ULI members was charged with seeking answers around economic viability and resiliency suggestions related to land use planning, affordable housing, and natural systems restoration. The Panel presented recommendations to the community after a week-long immersion into the issues, with interviews of over 100 citizens and elected officials.
“I have often said that I get more out of the Advisory Services Panels than perhaps I give. The Panels usually include a mix of professionals from around the country with expertise in development strategy, economics and marketing, design and planning, and policy/ implementation – the discussion is very rich during the week and educational on many levels. The magic begins with no bias as to how to solve the problems, but they always get revealed through debate and ultimately consensus as the week proceeds. While I have worn many hats in my ULI tenure through the years, I would rate the 17 weeks of my life spent volunteering on the Panels as the most rewarding.” |
