What is UrbanPlan? Kicked off at New Tech High
February 5, 2014
UrbanPlan is a realistic, engaging, and academically demanding classroom-based curriculum in which students learn about the fundamental forces that affect development in the U.S.
For a second year, UrbanPlan was kicked off at our newest high school, New Tech High School, with 70 students participating. UrbanPlan trained ULI Sacramento members engage with the students twice during this 3 week course. ULI also provides volunteer leadership to serve as the “City Council” to hear the team’s presentations and select a winning proposal. Ten new ULI members trained this past Fall, and are participating at this round at New Tech. McClatchy High School will participate for the 7th year in the Spring.
Heidi Tschudin, Tschudin Consulting Group, an UrbanPlan volunteer says, “UrbanPlan is amazing. I’ve been a land use planner for 30 years and an instructor for much of that time, and I have never seen a program connect the dots so well for these kids. They become engaged, and they grapple with real trade-offs about real issues. Plus what’s not to like..combining legos and spreadsheets is brilliant!”
